The Certificate in Management Consulting Essentials is awarded by the Chartered Management Institute in conjunction with the Institute of Business Consulting, the leading professional body for consultants.

This is an excellent consultants training course and provides an introduction to management consultancy. It is aimed at people who are considering a move in to the profession from a functional discipline, or for those who wish to obtain insight to the skills and knowledge needed in the field of management consultancy.

As the first in a range of consultancy training courses it is ideal for those considering a career in consultancy, new to the profession or existing practitioners seeking their first step to achieving professional accredited status. Those employed as internal consultants are able to develop a more holistic approach to their consultancy interventions.

Although there are no formal entry requirements, participants need to have an appreciation of management theories and concepts and be able to demonstrate their ability to study and work at this level.

Consultancy course content:

The purpose of this consultancy qualification programme is to explore the role of the management consultant. It considers the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours required by an effective consultant. It looks at ethical standards and codes of conduct and will give you a framework to evaluate your current knowledge, skills and behaviours to plan your future development.

It includes an overview of the development of the consultancy market, reviews the phases of the consultancy process and typical consultancy interventions introducing a range of tools, skills and techniques to support effective interaction with clients. The role of effective communication is considered as well as core communication techniques. An overview of project delivery including risk, quality assurance and effective personal contribution is followed by investigating core consultancy skills in knowledge sourcing, research and analysis.

Assessment:

This 45 hour distance learning consultancy course qualification is delivered  using specially prepared learning materials. It has been split into three learning modules designed to cover the full syllabus (see overleaf). The three learning modules are:

·           The theory and practice of consultancy

·           Building relationships and effective communication

·           Problems solving, analysis and project management

In order to achieve the qualification, participants must successfully complete written time-constrained assignment of around 3000 words. The assessment is set and marked by the Institute and is undertaken at the end of the consultancy course.
